Alma Gates is a native of Richmond Va and grew up in the Churchill area of the city. She was educated in the Richmond Public School System, graduating from Armstrong High School with honors. She went on to attend Virginia State University and majored in Elementary Education. Ms. Gates was employed by Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., now Verizon Communications. She retired after 30 years of rewarding service, however returned to the workforce after a few years of traveling. She has been employed with Henrico County Public Schools for 24 years. She feels that it is really rewarding being in the classroom, being able to make an impact on the students. Her hobbies are reading, traveling and listening to all genres of music- her favorite being jazz. Her ultimate goal is to retire again.

Adopt-A-Class
The women of NAUW have adopted a Head Start and provides school supplies and special treats.
NAUW Lillian Ward McDaniel Scholarship
The Richmond brand of NAUW provides a $1000 scholarship to a worthy student who needs financial assistance to earn a Bachelor's Degree.
Coat Drive
With a warm heart, we warm others through our coat drive.
Mobile Hope
We support other organizations who help us to extend our reach into the community. Mobile Hope empowers homeless and at-risk youth by providing support and emergency shelter to youth up to age 24.
Peter Paul Food Drive
We support the Peter Paul Development Center with food boxes and care packages as they focus on empowering the community, engaging families, and educating youth.
